They should focus on creating entertaining game experiences

Edmund McMillen, the designer of The Binding of Isaac and one half of Team Meat, believes that indie game makers can only succeed as long as they try to create the best experience they can rather than simply focus on delivering hits.

Speaking to Gamasutra, the game maker says, “If you start worrying too much about how to sell your game, or who your target audience is you are shooting yourself in the foot from the start because it's these kind of thoughts that push you into the mindframe of a large budget studio with big money on the line.”

The rise of the PC gaming space in the last few years means that indie gamers are now more successful than ever, especially given the growing popularity of services like Steam Greenlight and Kickstarter.
