The game creators behind Hotline Miami acknowledge that much of the inspiration for their stylish and violent title was drawn from Drive, the Nicolas Winding Refn movie starring Ruan Gosling as a mysterious getaway driver.

Speaking to Eurogamer the team behind the game states, “The music and feel to the story - not much dialogue and how the violence was portrayed in the movie - were a big inspiration. And we didn't try to hide it either.”

Jonatan Soderstrom and Dennis Wedin also reveal that they have never actually been to Miami and that much of the flavor of Hotline was drawn from documentary called Cocaine Cowboys and from the Miami Vice series.

Another inspiration that their pair cited was Killer 7, although neither of them played No More Heroes before creating Hotline Miami.
