PlanetSide 2 players are looking to reclaim the game's Guinness World Record for the greatest number of concurrent players engaged in a battle in a massively multiplayer online game.

The original first-person shooter PlanetSide held the record for "Most Players Online in a First-Person Shooter Battle" until 2012, when the game lost it to Man vs. Machine, a browser-based creation that tailored especially for the occasion and was only online for one day.

Now, PlanetSide 2 is looking to take back the title, and topping the number of 999 concurrent players might not even be that hard, as hype is being prodigiously built around the event on the PlanetSide subreddit.

The group is currently aiming to put all server rivalries aside and gather 1.1k players in a three-way battle on the continent of Hossin, in order to break the current record.

The battle is scheduled to take place on January 24, starting at 10:00 PM UTC (GMT), and will involve all three in-game factions, so everyone is welcome to join.

Even if you're not a regular player of the game, you can still join the effort by installing the free-to-play shooter and following the instructions on Reddit.

The event is being organized and planned as seriously as possible, so if you do want to partake, you have to register your intent to do so. Various server representatives will be dealing with the logistics, and you can follow the link above in order to learn how to get in touch with the proper one.

PlanetSide 2 will also be making the jump to the PlayStation 4 home entertainment system from Sony on January 20, in North America at least, as the European edition might be delayed for a short while.
