Developer Harebrained Schemes has released the first gameplay trailer for Necropolis, its upcoming procedural hack-and-slash game.

The devs say that the game mixes timing-based combat with pattern recognition elements, just like the Dark Souls series, with roguelike elements such as procedural world generation and enemy placement.

The visual style is very sleek, making the game look very stylish and smooth while in motion. The plot follows an endless string of adventurers venturing into the depths of the Necropolis, an ancient tomb that serves as resting place for a powerful archmage, in the pursuit of trinkets and baubles of untold power.

The game has a grim mood and promises ever-shifting mazes and a ton of random elements to keep things fresh, and a wealth of combat options.

The trailer shows that proper timing is crucial if you want to survive the perils of the Necropolis, and that death is swift, especially when you are fighting giant shark monsters.

Necropolis is currently looking at a 2016 release, headed to PC, Mac and Linux, but Harebrained Schemes has mentioned that it's also looking at a potential release on consoles.

The studio is currently also working on Shadowrun: Hong Kong, the follow-up to 2013's hit cyberpunk meets fantasy role-playing game.
