The MMORPG is considered one of the best of its kind, and its success is well-earned

NCsoft, the publisher of Guild Wars, has revealed that there are around 3.8 million people playing its best massively multiplayer online role-playing game Guild Wars 2 in China, just two months after the game was launched.

According to the company's census, its sales were boosted by an additional 3.8 million copies, raising the global sales mark of Guild Wars 2 to over 7 million units moved. The game was released two years ago in the west, and it seems that the decision to launch the game in China was a very lucrative one for developer ArenaNet, effectively doubling the game's global sales.

Although the Chinese market is dominated by free-to-play titles, ArenaNet proved its naysayers wrong by sticking to its traditional business model, and now enjoying a well-earned infusion of cash.

The company celebrated the Chinese launch with various in-game events, inspired by traditional Chinese aesthetics, and is now preparing to release further content in its Living World Season 2, which premiered in-game on July 1.

The game has a pretty weird hybrid business model, when you only have to pay once in order to get the client, and then are free to enjoy it without having to pay a monthly subscription. Although there were many detractors saying that such a model was hard-pressed to support the frequent updates that ArenaNet was promising, the company has just demonstrated that, as long as there are more markets to move into, it's going to do just fine.
