After lots of waiting and speculation, Sony has revealed that Grand Theft Auto III, the cult classic open-world game that first appeared on the PlayStation 2, will be re-released today on the North American PlayStation Store, as part of the PS2 Classics lineup.

Grand Theft Auto fans are currently expecting the release of GTA V at some point in the near future but, until then, PlayStation 3 owners can now look forward to re-experiencing the first in the series of modern open-world games – Grand Theft Auto III.

The game will be released today, September 25, on the North American PlayStation Store as part of Sony’s PS2 Classics lineup, meaning it won’t feature any new content or enhanced graphics.

Even so, it’s great to see such a cult game appear on the PSN and, hopefully, we might see its successor, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, also appear for the PS3 in the near future.
