The development team at Polyphony Digital and publisher Sony say that the Gran Turismo racing series has managed to sell more than 70 million units since it was launched, with the fifth title in the series reaching the 10 million-copy mark.

Jim Ryan, the president and chief executive officer at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, is quoted on the official Twitter account as saying that about half of the sales were linked to the European market.

He also says that in the long term, the Gran Turismo series will remain linked to the PlayStation brand of devices.

During an event at Silverstone, Polyphony Digital announced that Gran Turismo 6 was being worked on and would be launched in winter 2013 on the PlayStation 3, complete with 1,200 cars and 33 tracks.
