Specialist retail chain Gamestop acknowledges that it will no longer be accepting PlayStation 2 hardware or software as trade-ins starting on June 1 and says that it is now focused on the launch of the next generation of devices from Sony.

The company tells Engadget that, "We will still offer a wide selection of the PS2 hardware, accessories and games in many of our stores and online for several months, based on remaining stock from trades."

It adds, "We are very excited about the upcoming PS4 and are making room in our stores for it and other new platforms expected this fall."

The fact that Gamestop is no longer accepting the PlayStation 2 for trades will probably create a more informal market place for the hardware and will lead to lower prices for those who want to sample its 10,000-strong video game library.
