Video game specialist retailer Gamestop announces that it has seen an increase in its overall sales for the holiday period, which ended on January 4 and lasted for nine weeks, because of the launch of the Xbox One from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 from Sony.

The company says that the value of all the merchandise that was bought reached 3.15 billion dollars (2.98 billion Euro), which is 9 percent more than in the same period of 2012, according to Gamasutra.

At the same time, the company says that new game sales have seen a big decline, as titles for the Xbox One and the PS4 failed to move enough units to offset the fact that Xbox 360 and PS3 sold much less software.

In the long term, Microsoft and Sony need to find a way to shift more next-gen games in order to keep the overall gaming industry healthy.

The NPD Group is expected to report a general decline for December 2013 when it reports its figures later in the week.
