The developer would still choose it when starting the game

Hidetaka Miyazaki, the game director working on Dark Souls, reveals that the pendant that players can choose when creating a new character in the game as a gift has no actual in-game effect and is only intended as a joke from the development team.

He tells IGN that, “When it comes to the pendant, I actually had a little bit of an intention to play a prank.”

Despite this statement, Miyazaki has also said that this would be the gift he would choose when starting a new game.

The other character creation options include: a healing potion, a cache of bombs, a ring or a skeleton key.

Dark Souls is well known for its hardcore nature and the statement from the game developer needs to be taken with a grain of salt.

The developers have stated that they have more plans for DLC for the game.
