Paul Boyer, the lead game designer working on Galactic Civilizations III, says that his team has decided to switch the game to a hex-based structure in order to create a better balance and eliminate the exploit of moving diagonally among a square grid.

He tells PC Gamer that, “I was always bothered by the fact that if you move diagonally, you’re technically getting two tiles. We moved to hexes so everything could be equidistant, and it just looks sexier – more science fiction.”

The developer says that he wants the new game to be familiar to long-term fans, but also interesting for newcomers.

Most of the old races that gamers love will return, while players will also be able to enjoy entirely new ones like the Iridium Corporation.

Galactic Civilizations III is also designed to offer an enhanced interface to build ships and the game has an entirely new ideology system that will replace the alignment seen in the previous installment in the turn-based strategy title.
