John Gibson, the president of developer Tripwire Interactive, says that the biggest problem with the first person shooter at the moment is the dominance of the Call of Duty game model that Activision has promoted in the last few years. The executive tells PC Gamer that, “I think that single-player shooters are getting better. I think they’re finally coming out from under the shadow of the Hollywood movie, overblown ‘I’m on a rail’ linear shooter. I’m talking about Call of Duty-style shooters.”
The model can be traced back to the launch of the first World War II themed title in the series and has only marginally improved with the launch of Modern Warfare and Black Ops.
Gibson believes that one of the most encouraging evolutions is the blending of core first person shooter mechanics with elements taken from the role playing genre.
Tripwire Interactive launched the military themed shooter Red Orchestra 2.
