Robin Antonick, the programmer who created the core mechanics of the first video game in the Madden series, is getting 11 million dollars (8.2 million Euro) in damages from publisher Electronic Arts after a court ruled that he had been withheld royalties for sequels.

The first Madden American football simulation was launched in 1988 and the programmer says that sequels up to the NFL 96 release were created using his technology.

A United States District Court in the Northern District of California decided the EA had to pay royalties, according to CVG.

Madden NFL is one of the most successful sports simulation titles in the world and generates a lot of revenue for the publisher.

The 25th anniversary of the game is being celebrated this year with a new experience that will be offered on the PC, the current generation of consoles, the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4.
