Square Enix announced that Final Fantasy VII would be released for the PlayStation 4 home console from Sony sometime next year.

The disclosure comes from the PlayStation Experience event, and Square Enix even released a trailer for the occasion. Granted, while it’s not the good news that everyone was waiting for, which would have been a complete remake of one of the most popular entries in the long-standing series, it’s still something to look forward to.

Final Fantasy VII was for a lot of PC and PlayStation owners an introduction to the Final Fantasy franchise and to Japanese role-playing games altogether, and the title has recently been voted top contender in a poll meant to see what game Japanese players would want the most to see remastered.

Looking at the massive pile of requests Square Enix got to remake Final Fantasy VII, this could seem to some like a slap in the face, as 480p low-poly 3D graphics don’t age all that well, but hopefully, this is a move meant to gauge actual interest in the 1997 role-playing game.

Final Fantasy VII is considered to have been the gateway to Japanese role-playing games for many western gamers, as it was the first installment in the series to also be released in Europe and on PC.
