Frank Gibeau, the executive in charge of EA Labels, says that the Ignite and Frostbite 3 game engine share some technology but they are designed to solve very different gameplay challenges.

He tells IGN that those who use Ignite have to deal with sports-related mechanics that often use a limited number of characters in an enclosed setting, for titles like FIFA or UFC.

At the same time, teams involved with Frostbite deal with more characters and larger action set-pieces.

Gibeau adds, “It’s as if you have a 2,000-member engine team. That’s why we’re so confident in being able to stay ahead and keep this a world-class engine.”

The new Star Wars game from Electronic Arts will also use Frostbite 3.

The core game that employs the engine is Battlefield 4, the DICE shooter that arrives in late October.
