BioWare needs to deliver more interesting villains

Dragon Age: Inquisition is now launched all over the world and I suspect that there are players who have already managed to complete a lot of the story and have met the big evil of the single-player story, Corypheus, the entity which has opened the breach in the Fade and aims to mix the Fade and the world of the living.

Initially, the main threat in the new BioWare title is not linked to a person and the air of mystery is interesting because it forces players and their companions to work together trying to find practical solutions, like one would do when facing a powerful natural phenomenon like a hurricane or a plague.

Once certain events take place and Corypheus appears, riding on his demon dragon, the situation changes and the efforts of the Inquisition are focused on eliminating those who are working with the new threat and on denying him resources he can use to basically destroy the world.

Plenty of role-playing games have created impressive villains, nuanced and with style, but for the most recent Dragon Age title, BioWare has delivered an antagonist that fails to feel fearsome and has no space for subtlety.

His pet dragon is more fearsome and the various allies he tries to recruit can deliver some interesting points of view when it comes to the future of Thedas and those living on the continent, and they end up overshadowing their boss.

Gamers need a reason to push the story forward

Thankfully, Dragon Age: Inquisition is big enough and has so many side quests that even players who have no interest in the main quest will move forward through the story in order to explore their relationships with companions or to see what power brokers they will get to meet and deal with.

This is fortunate because Corypheus is not a good enough character to motivate a gamer to spend the 30 or more hours required to complete the new BioWare experience for an average gamer.

Spoilers for Dragon Age: Inquisition are present from this point on

After the end of the story, the development team introduces a small teaser that suggests that an even more sinister force is set to threaten both the player and the world, and the character features become, in only a few minutes, more interesting and menacing than Corypheus is over the course of the entire game.
