Microsoft has confirmed that a brand new system software update for the Xbox 360 has just gone live, in the form of version 2.0.16747.0 that makes a series of backend changes but also improves the Xbox Video rental system.

Microsoft has been really busy with fresh firmware updates for its Xbox One console, but the company hasn't forgotten about its old Xbox 360 as it's just rolled out a new system software version for the device.

According to the Twitter of Xbox Live Community Manager Larry Hryb, firmware update 2.0.16747.0 brings a series of backend changes for the console, so owners shouldn't get too excited about it.

One of the very few major tweaks relates to the Xbox Video rental service. After the installation of the new firmware, you start a video rental on the Xbox 360 and continue it on another platform, like the Xbox One.

No other details have been revealed by Microsoft and, considering its past strategies with Xbox 360 updates, don't expect it to share anything about the new system software anytime soon.

Xbox One owners, on the other hand, can expect a suite of changes for their new console later this month, after Microsoft makes some last minute tweaks to its new firmware.
