The development team at Blizzard announces that the Auction House system for Diablo 3 will be shut down completely on March 18 of 2014, with more information on how the process will unfold set to be offered in the coming months.

The studio says that it initially made the Auction House to create a secure trading system for all items, but the way players are using it have undermined the core mechanics of the game.

Both the gold and the real-money versions will be eliminated at the same time.

In an official blog post, Blizzard states, "We feel that this move along with the Loot 2.0 system being developed concurrently with Reaper of Souls will result in a much more rewarding game experience for our players."

It's unclear whether players will continue to use the Auction House knowing that the company plans to eliminate it.

The Reaper of Souls expansion for Diablo 3 is expected to launch in 2014.
