The feeling of competing with another player was unique

One of the original developers of Warcraft: Orcs Versus Humans describes the feeling he had when he first played the strategy game against another living human being.

Patrick Wyatt, a programmer who worked on the first Warcraft, tells Gamasutra that, “The knowledge that I was competing against an able human player - not just in terms of skill and strategy, but also in terms of speed of command - but was prevented from seeing his actions by the fog of war was both electrifying and terrifying.”

The developer says that no other game he worked on during his career has impressed him as much.

At the moment, the legacy of the strategy game can be seen in the MMO World of Warcraft, for which Blizzard continues to put out expansions every few years.
