Choices make a different in Human Revolution when it comes to combat

Deus Ex: Human Revolution was released last week by publisher Square Enix and developer Eidos Montreal as a prequel to the massively successful and influential Deus Ex, and its sequel, Deus Ex: Invisible War, launched at the beginning of the 2000s.

According to its developer, Human Revolution's gameplay has four basic aspects: hacking, social, stealth and actual combat. We've already talked about the social boss battles or the importance of hacking, as well as the game's fondness for stealth, but it's also worth mentioning the combat system and its various shades.

Combat in the new Deus Ex can be split into either lethal or non-lethal, and from there on, things get quite varied.

First up, let's talk about the traditional lethal combat, just like in almost all video games these days. Despite all its RPG mechanics, Human Revolution is still a first person shooter, which snaps to third person once the protagonist, Adam Jensen, is behind cover.

During these times, you're definitely going to feel like you're experiencing traditional shooters like Call of Duty or Uncharted, but with golden highlights in the environments. You can use weapons like pistols or various rifles, not to mention the Jensen's special augmentations, which enable him to extend lethal blades from his arms and impale his enemies.

Like with stealth, however, Deus Ex doesn't really like players killing everyone they meet, as lethal takedowns are rewarded with less experience than non-lethal ones, so let's talk about them for a while.

Jensen can wield two special weapons for non-lethal combat, a close quarters stun gun or a long range tranquilizer rifle. If you want a more hands-on approach, the hero can also use his fists to knockout opponents.

Once they're down, however, players should certainly try to hide the bodies, as once other enemies find them, the alarm is triggered. What's more, seeing as how the player just stunned his opponents, they can easily be awakened by their friends, meaning more bad guys to eliminate.

Playing non-lethal is definitely one of the most rewarding experiences, especially when combined with stealth, but there were quite a few moments when I got tired of sneaking around and just started killing enemies left and right.
