The future is now. That is, if it were playable, which it isn't.

If you're curious what gaming will look like in the (hopefully) near future, that is if the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 generation doesn't span another eight years, then you're in for a nice surprise.

Someone hacked Crytek's Crysis 3, making the already impressive first-person shooter run in a very wide 8K resolution. K-putt's tweak to the game's files lets its graphics sprawl across 8,000x3,333 pixels, which is about 13 times more than you would usually see in a regular 1080p image.

Of course, the results of the hack are gorgeous, and the renders look more like paintings than actual video game screenshots, with everything being full of detail. Crysis 3 already was full of detail, with incredibly high resolution textures, so this makes everything even more impressive.

Evidently, nothing can play the game at this resolution, not even the most powerful gaming PCs in the world. Which does not necessarily mean you'll miss out on anything, because it's not like you'll be able to find 8K screens in any stores near you.

This is not a new thing, as there are many gamers who harness the power of their hardware and then downsample the end result when displaying it on a monitor, in order to enhance the visual quality of the games they play, but the results are beautiful nonetheless.
