The team at Valve says that it is implementing a Crate and key system in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, similar to the ones already running in Team Fortress 2 and DOTA 2, which will give the community new ways to create exciting competitions.

The official Twitter channel for the game states, “This week’s update also include a new way for the community to help build up prize pools at competitive CS:GO events. More info coming soon!”

At the moment, the items included in crates are cosmetic, allowing players to customize their weaponry, but they could be upgraded to also include rare items or abilities.

The move might also be a sign that Valve is thinking about making Counter-Strike: Global Offensive a free-to-play game, relying on revenue generated by the shop and keys to fund future game development.

Recently, silencers have also been revealed as coming to the game in a future update.
