Sony has confirmed that it's going to take down the PlayStation Network online service later today, August 29, at 9am PT, and it's going to be unavailable for around one hour.

The PlayStation Network is the backbone of Sony's different consoles, whether they're the PlayStation 3, PSP, or PS Vita, and will certainly be a core feature of the upcoming PlayStation 4 next-gen device.

As such, the company is constantly improving the quality of the service so that no other problems arise.

The next bit of improvement will require a maintenance period that's set to kick off today, August 29, at 9am PT (aka 12pm ET or 4pm GMT).

The period of unavailability will last around one hour, according to the PlayStation Twitter account.

During this time, the PSN and PlayStation Store will be offline and it's unclear if multiplayer will be affected.
