An increase in the team size might limit collaboration

Paul Hellquist, the creative director and lead designer of Borderlands 2, says that his team believes that four is the best number of players for a cooperative multiplayer experience.

The team is already exploring possibilities for the future of the series and it seems that the power of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4 might be used to enhance other areas of the game while the number of players is the same.

He tells AusGamers, “We do have a little bit of a worry that if we go to eight or sixteen or something crazy, that everyone will spread out, and you’ll kind of actually lose that more intimate ‘We’re working together’ kind of experience.”

The Borderlands 2 coop was also limited to four players because of performance issues linked to the network traffic associated with the mode.

Gearbox is surely already testing the core ideas for a new entry in the series.
