BioShock Infinite, the video game developed by Irrational Games and publisher by 2K, has managed to sell 878,000 copies at retail in the United States in the five days since its March 26 launch, which guaranteed it first place in the NPD Group software chart.

The actual number is quoted by VG247 even if the tracking firm is no longer offering actual figures in its monthly industry report.

BioShock Infinite has also sold a number of copies via the Steam digital distribution service and other similar outlets, which are not tracked by the NPD Group.

The game takes players to the floating city of Columbia and manages to mix solid first-person shooter mechanics with a deep story and an interesting take on the nature of reality and choice.

BioShock Infinite's performance helped software post a 2 percent increase in sales value in the NPD data, even if the industry as a whole declined by more than 10%.
