Electronic Arts confirms that the next iteration in the Battlefield franchise after next year's Hardline installment will return to military warfare and should delight fans in 2016, possibly under the Battlefield 5 name.

EA's Battlefield franchise is currently the only direct competitor to Activision's Call of Duty franchise, and while the publisher wanted to debut Battlefield Hardline this October to rival Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, it ultimately decided to give developer Visceral Games more time to polish the cops vs. robbers shooter.

However, this doesn't mean that it's not looking towards the future, as franchise founder DICE is working hard on the next big installment, possibly named Battlefield 5, which should appear in 2016.

While talking at the UBS Global Technology Conference, via GameSpot, EA CFO Blake Jorgensen has confirmed that Battlefield 5 is already shaping up quite well and that, unlike Hardline, which focuses on cops and criminals, it will once again concentrate on military warfare.

Jorgensen has declined to offer any more details but said that the series won't become an annual thing, as EA wants fans to have enough time to enjoy and immerse themselves in the experiences, not to mention their expansions.

Battlefield Hardline is set to debut on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One in early 2015.
