Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari and one of the legends of the game development community, says that Nintendo is at the moment in a very difficult position and might soon become irrelevant as Microsoft and Sony dominate the hardware space.

VG247 is quoting the executive as saying that, “Nintendo always had a soft spot for young people – they sort of did the 12-and-under pretty well, and the other guys did the 12-and-over and now I think the others are good enough on those things, and the rush to upgrade from the 12-and-under is not nearly as important.”

Bushnell also believes that mobile gaming devices are becoming less important because most people have access to a smartphone that can offer a similar experience at a fraction of the price.

The Atari founder also believes that virtual reality devices like the Oculus Rift will have a major impact on gaming and will become the basis for future experiences.

Nintendo has recently announced a price cut for the Wii U.
