Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag Game Director Ashraf Islamil admitted that multiplayer naval battles were considered for the upcoming title but, during the development, the experiences didn't work as intended.

Assassin's Creed 4 takes the naval mechanic of its predecessor and puts it into the spotlight, as players take control of pirate assassin Edward Kenway, who commands his ship around the Caribbean.

While traveling on the sea is important in the single-player, the multiplayer won't have any naval battles as Ubisoft didn't manage to make them work.

"Naval multiplayer, unfortunately, we don't have it," Ismail told GameSpot. "It's something we tried at the beginning, but we didn't feel we can get it to a good enough level for this iteration."

Ismail's statement leaves the door open for online naval battles in the next installments of the Assassin's Creed franchise, as Ubisoft already confirmed that more games are in development.
