Sometimes it’s better to opt for something classic and familiar when it comes to video games, especially in genres like hidden object or match three. Granted, they can also get too repetitive to be fun after a while, depending on how much time you spend playing. New ideas are always welcome, on the other hand, and it’s great to tackle intriguing new concepts.

Rescue Quest Gold is a match-three game in which you have to approach the genre from a slightly different angle, yet it still feels familiar. Hence, even if you still have to move colorful jewels around in order to get at least three of them in a row, you also have to tackle a few other challenges at the same time. To make things even better, there’s an interesting story running in the background as well.   The plot follows two wizards as they go through the magic academy in order to learn the ropes of the trade and improve their powers. They also have to rescue spritelings along the way, not to mention the fact that there’s an evil sorcerer trying to destroy the world. Hence, there’s plenty to do, even if most of these events are only cutscene gimmicks and they do not affect the gameplay.

Speaking of which, the gameplay revolves around moving tiles around in order to get at least three of the same kind in a row. However, you must also do this to allow your character to move across the board and reach the spriteling cages, which adds a bit more complexity to the whole thing. It’s also possible to create power-ups by matching more than three jewels so that you can clear the board a lot faster.   Since every level forces you to do all of this with a limited number of moves, the difficulty level is up there, although it shouldn’t bother you too much. As far as the graphics are concerned, they are not going to win any awards, but they are colorful enough to put a smile on your face. The same goes for the soundtrack, since it’s very jolly and enjoyable.

Rescue Quest Gold features enough new ideas to pique your interest, even if you have already tried all of the other match-three games out there. It’s also quite challenging, and the story keeps you engaged as well.
