Kinetic visual novels are obviously not designed to keep you alert and train your reflexes, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t fun and engaging. In fact, if you enjoy listening to a story without having to interact with the characters or making decisions, kinetic visual novels are your best, given the fact that they are self-reading books with a lot of pictures.
Corona Blossom Vol.1 Gift From the Galaxy is one of these visual novels that can go on by itself, and it presents an intriguing futuristic world where almost everyone relies on robots in order to do their bidding and take care of important business, such as agriculture. On the other hand, people still need human interaction, which is why the game at hand is based on relationships and friendships.
In essence, the plot revolves around a young boy by the name of Keiji Osaki, who is a robot repairman ready and capable of fixing almost anything robot-related. The machines he fixes are called VORKS, which are actually industrial robots used in tough jobs around factories. However, he hates doing this, even if he is good at it. Naturally, his opinion changes once he meets some kind of metallic lifeform that needs his help.
Since this is a kinetic novel, there are no choices and no dialog options to pester you. Thus, you only need to touch the mouse if you want to skip to the next dialog line, although even that is automated and you have full control over the text speed. It can get boring if you are not interested in the story, but then again there are some spicy scenes in there as well, although they are designed for adults only.
Speaking of which, the artwork and the visual quality is paramount in visual novels, because there’s nothing else to distract you from it. Thankfully, the artwork is incredible in Corona Blossom Vol.1 Gift From the Galaxy, especially since the characters are even slightly animated to appear three-dimensional. Thus, it looks a lot better than your regular visual novel flick.
When it’s all said and done, it’s difficult to give an opinion on Corona Blossom Vol.1 Gift From the Galaxy’s story and character progression, because none of those are clear in the demo. However, there seems to be a lot of potential here, especially in the graphics department.
